Story
Rather than asking for anything for myself for my birthday this year, I'd like to raise money for The Indigenous Literacy Foundation and would immensely appreciate any and all donations.
Having lived and worked in a public library in Alice Springs, I have seen first hand the benefits of having regular access to reading material. Remote based Indigenous children in Central Australia do not have the benefit of having access to a library service (yet…), so donating to The Indigenous Literacy Foundation is the best way to put books into children’s hands in places like Areyonga, Kintore, Titjikala, Docker River, Imanpa, and Papunya.
The Indigenous Literacy Foundation also works with remote communities to develop books in their local language, such as the most recent release of "I Saw, We Saw" (https://www.panmacmillan.com.au/9780648155492/), which was launched on Indigenous Literacy Day on September 4 2019. It was written and illustrated by students from Nhulunbuy Primary School and features words in Yolngu Matha.
My target is $400, as this will put an early literacy pack into a playgroup in a remote community.
Donations made through this platform are secure and will be remitted directly through to my charity of choice.
Thanks so much for your support!
Indigenous Literacy Foundation
Being able to read opens so many doors. But in very remote Indigenous communities, books are all too scarce and literacy levels are much lower than anywhere else in Australia. Our purpose is to make a difference to the lives of Indigenous families by not only gifting thousands of new culturally appropriate books - with a focus on early literacy and first language - but also by running programs to inspire the communities to tell and publish their own stories.
