Story
hi there! for those who know me well, you know i can't stop talking about diving the minute it comes up. apologies to that one kind soul who had to sit through 30mins of me yapping away about how amazing diving is at a work networking event last week...
for my birthday this year, i am doing a dive in the great barrier reef. while i’ve been counting down impatiently to this trip the last couple of months, i have also heard from multiple sources that i'm wasting my time and there are other more beautiful reefs out there that have yet to be infected by coral bleaching. based on an article on the straits times, the great barrier reef is suffering from its 7th bleaching episode since 1998. loss of the coral reef habitat can result in extinction of marine species and disrupt fisheries, while reef degradation means that shorelines have less of a buffer against waves and storms. while i'm still brimming with excitement about seeing one of the 7 natural wonders of the world, i can't help but feel a sense of sinking dread too.
however, it's not lost on me that there's tons of good work out there that's being done! the australian marine conservation society (amcs) aims to protect critical ocean ecosystems with marine conserves around the nation. it doesn't take a genius to figure out that our oceans are not in good shape. severe overfishing, climate change, oil spills, are just a few threat actors that are slowly sucking the life out of ocean. amcs, the voice for australia's oceans, drives a few campaigns that does amazing work. one of the campaigns that speaks to me is 'fight for our reef".
'fight for our reef' calls on key decision-makers like political leaders and corporations to enact change and work for the protection and conservation of the great barrier reef. in the upcoming days, i will share a little bit more on coral bleaching, how 'fight for our reef' has been leading the good fight, some milestones, any literature i come across while researching and why there is still hope!
to make this birthday(month) even more meaningful and special than it already is, i am raising funds for this amazing cause & involving all of you too! it would be the best birthday gift if you could donate ur time/$ 🤍
Australian Marine Conservation Society
The Australian Marine Conservation Society (AMCS) is the voice for Australia’s oceans. We are Australia’s only national charity dedicated solely to protecting our precious ocean wildlife – a community of ocean lovers across the nation working for healthy seas.
We are an independent charity, staffed by a committed group of scientists, educators and passionate advocates who have defended Australia’s oceans for over 55 years. Our paid and volunteer staff work every day to protect our coasts and oceans. AMCS works on the big issues that risk our ocean wildlife. Together, we have protected critical ocean ecosystems with marine reserves around the nation, including Ningaloo and the Great Barrier Reef. We have led the movement to ban whaling, stopped supertrawlers, and protected threatened and endangered species like the Australian Sea Lion.
Together, our community of ocean lovers save our oceans every day.If you want to help ensure Australia’s coasts and oceans remain healthy and free for tomorrow’s generations, join us today.
